Gridhunter The Gridfather

Ends at 2pm PDT on May 25th (9pm UTC)

________

"It is always raining in the walled megacity of Nyugalom.

Somewhere beneath it, inside a facility that sprawled under its Third Sector like honey fungus, Gridhunter Costas Alexiou, a.k.a. "Psychobit," was hacking the high-security Gridbolt on his thirty-first door of the day.

The facility belonged to the Matsudaira-Volkov Corporation, whose interconnected towers and factories extended from its hub in the center of Nyugalom like a gargantuan cephalopod. Alexiou had broken into it three days earlier after receiving a tip that the missing leader of the Gridhunters, known as "The Gridfather," was being held captive there.

The tip had turned out to be a trap set by TerminL, a two-byte thug from the Arcade and leader of a gang in the employ of the Corporation. Alexiou was captured, and spent the two days that followed in the interrogation offices of MV executive Barbara Mattinson, junior district vice president of Third Sector, who questioned him while he had his external cybernetics painfully removed from his body by TerminL.

Alexiou might have perished if it hadn't been for his internal cybernetics dulling the pain and enhancing his body's regenerative abilities. Cybernetics are a wonderful thing.

Alexiou began to despair, until TerminL mentioned he had sent a ransom note to Alexiou's lover, Ellen Kotara, a.k.a. Saint Lovelace. Alexiou had foolishly kept his mission a secret from Kotara, not wanting to worry her. Now, thanks to TerminL, she knew he had been captured.

Alexiou knew Kotara would be on her way. Kotara was a storm.

It was time to escape. He waited until Mattinson was in a meeting and TerminL was asleep, and broke out of the interrogation offices. He did not, however, head for the surface.

Alexiou had heard it from other sources than just TerminL. Whether it was by an accident of fate or because TerminL had heard the same rumors Alexiou had, he had got it exactly right. The Gridfather WAS in the facility, and TerminL's trap had allowed Alexiou to gain access to it.

A green light blinked on above the Gridbolt on which Alexiou had been working, and the door slid open. A light turned on automatically inside the small room as he entered it.

All it contained was an array of utility shelves on which had been stacked a few spools of cable, several piles of assorted wires, and an old man's head in a jar.

The head turned to Alexiou as he entered. "Who...who are you?" it quavered.

Cybernetics are a wonderful thing."
